I am very excited to have your child in my 1st grade class this year. I look forward to begin our year where we will learn and do many wonderful and fun things. It will be a year of social ineraction, character education, math, language arts, science, and social studies.

Please view my site as it contains useful information about the rules, homework policy, behavior plan, etc. I will update the page weekly to keep you informed about what is happening in our classroom.

  Rewards & Consequences

There are many ways that I like to encourage good behavior and discourage poor behavior.  I reward individual students for making good choices by giving Good Time Tickets.  A student can earn one ticket per day by demonstrating proper behavior such as following rules, helping others, participation, etc.  When a student has accumulated 10 tickets, he or she can redeem them by choosing an item out of the treasure box.

There are consequences for students who make poor choices.  I use an apple system, which consists of green, yellow, and red apples.  All children begin each day on green.  If a child makes a poor choice, he or she will be asked to move his or her worm to yellow, which is a warning.  Making another poor choice causes a child to move his or her worm to the red apple, which means that he or she will lose up to 10 minutes of recess.  Losing recess time means sitting quietly if recess is indoor or standing with me if I have recess duty.  If I am not on duty, the children stand quietly along the wall for the duration of time. If the child makes a poor choice after moving to red, a phone call will be made home to discuss the issue.

The class as a whole has opportunities to earn marbles toward a special treat.  When everyone demonstrates proper behavior or the class receives a compliment from other people in the building such as other teachers, they can earn marbles.  I have a blue man who likes to give the marbles to the students, but I also have a red man who likes to eat the marbles and take them away.  If the class as a group makes a poor choice, the red man will eat some of the marbles they previously earned.
